The Masses Find Blogging
07.22.05 (1:33 pm)   [edit]

I'm beginning to wonder if anyone is paying attention any more - not just to me, but to any blog.

The great thing about blogs is the same as the great thing about web pages: Anyone can make one. There's no significant technical expertise involved.

The big downside to blogs is the same big downside to web pages: Anyone can make one. And they do.

So the first ten or a hundred blogs (or web pages) garner a lot of attention. Then every man jack puts up a blog, and there just aren't enough people to read them. This is totally aside from the fact that a great many blogs are just mind-numbingly boring. Imagine the most boring, petty, ignorant person you know. Now imagine what they're writing in their blog, because they have one, because everyone does.

Which is not to say that in the grand scheme of things, blog are bad. In the grand scheme, they're great. But in the man scheme of things - that is, my scheme - they've lost their luster.
